Windows Home Server Power Pack 3 Beta for Windows 7

Microsoft announced the beta release of the Windows Home Server Power Pack 3, also known as PP3, which comes with several enhancements for computers running on the Windows 7 operating system.

Among these new features you’ll encounter the full image-based computer backup option that allows you to recover all of your files in case of a hard drive failure. Once the Windows Home Server Connector software is installed on the Windows 7 computer you won’t receive notifications to backup the PC anymore. The Windows Home Server backup solution also works with Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista operating systems.

You will use Windows 7 Libraries for music, pictures and video content shared from the Windows Home Server, while Windows Search 4 enables improved query search times and overall reliability, so you can search for your files stored in various locations through a Library.

The Windows Media Center prompts you to install the Windows Media Center Connector, displaying the new Home Server selection in the menu.
TV Archiving allows you to move TV content you’ve recorded previously to the home server in different resolutions. More exactly, the shows will be archived in the appropriate resolution for the specific device you’ll use for playback.

In the Windows Media Center you’ll also find the Console Quick View for checking statistics about the home server, such as storage, drives details, backups, shared folders, media counters, the home network’s health, and system information on the server’s hardware and manufacturer.

The Power Pack 3 will be available as a free update via Windows Update and at the moment you can sign-up as a beta tester for the software.

Windows 7 Home Premium Family Pack?

Nowadays three computers per family is pretty common. If you read the License Agreement of Windows 7 Home Premium (who doesn’t?), there is a fragment that states:

“2. INSTALLATION AND USE RIGHTS.

a. One Copy per Computer. Except as allowed in Section 2 (b) below, you may install one copy of the software on one computer. That computer is the “licensed computer.”

b. Family Pack. If you are a “Qualified Family Pack User”, you may install one copy of the software marked as “Family Pack” on three computers in your household for use by people who reside there. Those computers are the “licensed computers” and are subject to these license terms. If you do not know whether you are a Qualified Family Pack User, visit go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?Linkid=141399 or contact the Microsoft affiliate serving your country.

c. Licensed Computer. You may use the software on up to two processors on the licensed computer at one time. Unless otherwise provided in these license terms, you may not use the software on any other computer.

d. Number of Users. Unless otherwise provided in these license terms, only one user may use the software at a time.

e. Alternative Versions. The software may include more than one version, such as 32-bit and 64-bit. You may install and use only one version at one time.”

We’ll have to wait and see how much this Family Pack will cost. For the right price, Microsoft will ensure you have the right gift for your family holydays.

Windows 7 beta automatic reboot begins today

Starting today and ending August 1^st, Windows 7 beta will reboot every two hours. This way Microsoft wants to draw attention to users that their version of Windows 7 will soon expire. If you don’t want to be bothered by the restarts, you can download and install Windows 7 RC, which will be available for download until August 15.

If you want to switch to Windows 7 RC, you should know that you have to do a “clean install”. Windows 7 RC will detect that you have a beta version of Windows 7 installed and will block the installation of the RC version. Microsoft is offering a way to update your beta version to RC version. This is the solution:

Download the ISO as you did previously and burn the ISO to a DVD.
Copy the whole image to a storage location you wish to run the upgrade from (a bootable flash drive or a directory on any partition on the machine running the pre-release build).
Browse to the sources directory.
Open the file cversion.ini in a text editor like Notepad.
Modify the MinClient build number to a value lower than the down-level build. For example, change 7100 to 7000 (pictured below).
Save the file in place with the same name.
Run setup like you would normally from this modified copy of the image and the version check will be bypassed.

Windows 7 RC will expire on June 1, 2010 and the reboot session will begin on March 1, 2010.

Microsoft Provides Educational Resources for Worldwide Teachers

During this year’s edition of the National Educational Computing Conference, which is taking place in Washington DC until July 1, Microsoft is showcasing some new solutions meant to help teachers and students be more productive and efficient.
Among these, participants at the conference will find out about the key features of the Windows 7 operating system, the partnership with the Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies, and various software releases meant to improve the education experience of students.

The 2.5 million teachers in the Innovative Teachers Network can obtain the advanced computer program called AutoCollage, developed by Microsoft Research and made available as a free download for creating digital photo montages and sharing a dynamic visual experience among students. In addition, members can get the new plug-in that integrates ITN content with learning management platforms.

New free software tools available for teachers include Worldwide Telescope with real images from world’s best observatories, Photosynth that allows students create 3D worlds and share them online, Expression Web curriculum bringing various tutorials and videos for middle and high school students, the Digital literacy curriculum for students who need to learn about Internet, computer software and security, as well as the Learning Essentials desktop application that allows teachers create administrative tasks, instructional resources and teaching strategies.

For students in the United States, Microsoft released CareerForward, an online course teaching students about career opportunities.

Regarding the key elements of the Windows 7 operating system that both teachers and students will benefit from to become more productive, Microsoft highlights the enhanced user interface with direct access to the most used applications, the multi-touch support with handwriting recognition for compatible computers, increased system performance and reliability, smarter power management for longer battery life for portable computers, more security features for data protection, and the Windows XP Mode that enables support for applications used in Windows XP.

New Windows 7 Build Leaked

Some of those who are anxiously waiting for the final release of the latest version of the most popular operating system, which was set for this autumn, more exactly on October 22th, have already tested the Release Candidate and helped Windows developers find fixes for different issues reported by testers.

Also, the others who didn’t have this chance yet, can still download and install the Beta version and play with it until June 1, 2010, when it will practically expire.
