Apple Tells us More About the Anti-Phishing Feature in iPhone OS 3.1

Earlier this month, Apple announced the availability of a new version of the iPhone OS, designed for users already using the 3.0 version.
iPhone OS 3.1 updates the handset’s software with the Genius recommendations for applications, wireless ringtone downloads, Genius Mixes, and many improvements and enhancements in synching, content organization and others.

One special capability enabled by the latest software update refers to anti-phishing, and Bill Evans, spokesman at Apple, explains more about this. He told The Loop about the anti-phishing database in the Safari web browser that downloads automatically while the handset is in charging mode, so it won’t interfere with user’s tasks, protecting the battery life. This won’t add data fees and, after updating the software to iPhone OS 3.1, the user can open the browser to connect via Wi-fi and charge the handset with the screen off. These steps should be followed just in case the update wasn’t performed automatically already.

The anti-phishing feature keeps users safe from potentially malicious web sites, warning them when landing on fraudulent pages.
When there are new updates to the Safari database, these are downloaded automatically. Besides this, iPhone OS 3.1’s latest enhancements are meant to enable a more pleasant mobile experience for iPhone’s users.

IPhone SMS vulnerability discovered

Do you remember Charlie Miller? The guy who broke into a fully patched MacBook using a Safari code execution vulnerability… Well, he discovered a new vulnerability. He announced this vulnerability at Syscan conference in Singapore.

This vulnerability could allow an attacker to remotely install and run unsigned software code with root access to the phone. Miller declared that “the SMS vulnerability allows an attacker to run software code on the phone that is sent by SMS over a mobile operator’s network. The malicious code could include commands to monitor the location of the phone using GPS technology, turn on the phone’s microphone to eavesdrop on conversations, or make the phone join a distributed denial-of-service attack or a botnet”.

The good news is that the IPhone OS 3.0 presents fewer options for attackers because it doesn’t have certain applications and features. “The iPhone also requires applications to run in a sandbox, a security feature that isolates them from other applications and limits their access to the phone’s capabilities. But SMS offers a way for attackers to get greater access to the iPhone’s capabilities”. Another good thing is that Apple designed IPhone OS to accept only digitally signed code.

Yesterday Apple announced the availability of the beta version of the SDK for IPhone OS 3.1. For sure this vulnerability will be patched using the version 3.1 of IPhone OS.

IPhone 3.1 beta SDK available for download

Today, the developers enrolled in the iPhone Developer Program received an email that said:

“iPhone SDK 3.1 beta and iPhone OS 3.1 beta are now posted to the iPhone Dev Center. These versions are for development and testing only and should be installed on devices dedicated to iPhone OS 3.1 beta software development. Please read the iPhone OS Pre-Install Advisory and the iPhone SDK 3.1 beta release notes before downloading and installingUse the Apple Bug Reporter if you discover compatibility or functionality issues while testing with the iPhone OS 3.1 beta release.”

One of the changes in IPhone OS3.1 beta is that you have a “Save a Copy” option For IPhone 3G S. If you want to edit a film, now you can first save a copy of the original movie. Also MMS function for AT&T carrier is activated, but is not fully functional.

Warning: if your device is unlocked using ultrasn0w’s software DO NOT UPGRADE because you will lock your IPhone. You should wait until version 3.1 will be final and then another ultrasn0w software will be released.
