Synology launches DS409Slim four-bay NAS

After the release of Disk Station DS-409+ NAS, Synology proved that they can go even slimmer. Using 2.5-inch laptop hard drives, the new, compact DS409Slim is only 4.7 inches by 4.1 inches by 5.6 inches in size. Because this four-bay NAS was designed for 2.5″ drives, the damage due to physical shock is minimized, the power consumption is reduced, leaving a smaller footprint.

DS409slim might be small but its hardware specifications include a 1.2GHz Marvell processor, 128MB of DDR2 RAM, one Gigabit Ethernet port, two USB 2.0 ports, and one eSATA port. DS409Slim supports up to 2 TB with the combination of four 2.5” SATA or SSD hard drives of 500 GB each.

Installing or replacing the disks is made easy by the snap-in tray. The disks, which are hot-swappable, can be arranged in many configurations like JBOD, RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, and RAID 6. UPnP support allows users to stream multimedia files with an UPnP Digital Media Adapter (DMA) on a stereo system or a TV-set. Sony PS3 and Microsoft Xbox360 are also supported.

If you want to use DS409Slim as a download center, Synology Download Station 2 is the answer. With this application, your NAS can function as a 24×7 BitTorrent, FTP, HTTP, eMule, and NZB download center.

Synology DS409Slim will be available soon at the price of $400.
