Over 300 million users of the Windows Live Messenger service provided by Microsoft are invited to upgrade to the latest version announced a couple of days ago on the company’s website. The latest update is Windows Live Messenger 14.0.8089 and is for those already using one of the 8.1, 8.5 and 14.0 versions of the software. It delivers new code fixes and different feature enhancements in addition to vulnerability fixes discovered in previous versions and mentioned in the Microsoft Security Advisory 973882.
Microsoft specified that the upgrade process has two phases. First, it will be optional by the end of September, and all users of the 8.1 or 8.5 versions can get the new software update. Starting October, users of the 14.0 versions up to 14.0.8089 can upgrade the messenger client.
In the second phase the upgrade will be mandatory and this will start in mid-September for Windows Live Messenger 8.1 or 8.5 users, who will be required to download the latest version, and starting October for users of the 14.0 version. After the mandatory upgrade period ends, users who don’t administer this upgrade won’t be able to login to the messenger client anymore.
To find out which version of the software you are using, you can go to the Help menu and read the version number in the About Messenger section.
New features of the latest Windows Live Messenger 14.0.8089 software include support for sharing photos, songs, links and videos right in the chat window, the What’s New feed for receiving updates from friends, selection of the most important contacts that will appear at the top of the messenger window for direct access, as well as the possibility to create groups and chat with 20 people simultaneously.
The upgrade is available at download.live.com.
