MacBook Air owners can download the second SMC firmware update released by Apple to fix the compatibility issue with the replacement batteries.
If you’d like to know more about this firmware type, SMC means System Management Controller and is for computers running with the Intel processing technology. The logic board of the computer features this micro-controller in charge with handling the power functions such as thermal management, the battery, the Sleep LED, fans, ALS, the Sudden Motion Sensor as well as the power switch.
In Apple MacBook Air’s case, the System Management Controller firmware update 1.2 adds support for the service replacement batteries and in order to perform the update you need to follow specific instructions displayed in the application, after launching the Software Update.
As an alternative, if you are an experienced user you have the possibility to download and install the firmware update manually from Apple’s website.
Details about the software include the full name MacBook Air SMC Firmware Update Version 1.2, release date June 29, a size of 623KB, and as system requirement having Mac OS X 10.5.7.
The supported languages include English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese, Suomi, Svensk Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
Besides the fact that the update requires a Mac-formatted disk or partition, you’ll have to follow specific steps to install it. Just close all open applications, then double-click the SMC Update.pkg file, click Continue, click Agree for accepting the terms, and finally click Install to start installation.
