The Apple online store now accepts pre-orders for its Mac OS X Snow Leopard which will be available in stores on August 28. Starting Friday, Mac users will be able to get Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard operating system from Apple’s Authorized Resellers and Apple retail stores. It now comes with support for Microsoft Exchange with data storage, email, contacts, calendars and tasks, while the upgrade on Mac computers powered by Intel processors costs users only $29.
The new operating system is faster and easier to use, featuring the following enhancements:
- Finder rewritten in Cocoa to support 64-bit and Grand Central Dispatch ,features customizable Spotlight search and redesigned icon view;
- Expose redesigned and integrated in the Dock with scrollable stacks;
- New Time Capsule supports wireless hard drive backups and Time Machine enables 80% faster backups;
- Faster wake up and 80% faster shut down;
- 50% faster system upgrade;
- Now the operating system occupies less space on the disck,freeing 7GB;
- Redesigned and faster QuickTime player with easy access to YouTube and MobileMe;
- Support for Chinese input via the multi-touch trackpad;
- Less technical requirements for iChat and 640 x 480 resolution for iChat Theater;
- The contextual Services menu with Automator allows you to work in an application while using features from another;
- Automatic printer drivers update as you plugin the printer;
- Automatic time zone setup by locating Wi-Fi hotspots;
- New possibility to select PDF text that has more than a column;
- Safari 4 web browser enables 50% faster JavaScript performance;
- Improved disk eject;
- More efficient file sharing based on the Bonjour technology;
- Support for up to 40 braile display models including Bluetooth-based ones.
You can get Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard together with iWork ’09 and iLife ’09 for $169, while the Mac OS X Server v10.6 Snow Leopard with unlimited client license sells for $499.
