iPhone App Store turns one year old today

Today we have a reason to celebrate. Apple’s App Store turns one year old. It seems that only yesterday we were excited with news of the opening, feeling like kids entering a brand new toy store with a lot of cool stuff. The idea of applications stores is not a new one, but Apple gave it a new spin. They made the App Store easy to use and accessible from one’s iPhone. People started to enjoy their mobile device with all the surprising uses provided by different applications.

The success of the Apps Store didn’t go unnoticed as operators, mobile phone makers and independent companies began implementing this concept by building stores that can be accessed from mobile phones and that offer wireless downloads. For the Blackberry platform, RIM put into action the App World and for the phones that use Windows Mobile, Microsoft launched its own application store. Not wanting to fall behind, Nokia was urged to “open” its, much smaller, Ovi Store.

To appreciate just how popular the App Store really is, you just have to remember that in April it reached a huge number of downloads: a billion. Considering that it was in existence for less than a year, this is a huge accomplishment.

We have to acknowledge the App Store’s influence on the mobile device platform. It shaped the way we look at our mobile phones and especially our iPhones.
