Hitachi Delivers World’s First 2TB 7200 HDD for Desktop Computers

The world’s first 2TB 7200 RPM hard disk drives for desktop computers were announced today by Hitachi Global Storage Technologies. The hard drives are shipping now in a 3.5-inch form factor featuring the company’s five-platter design and the perpendicular magnetic recording technology.
The model is named the 2TB Deskstar 7K2000 and is suitable for power users and gamers. It also features quiet operation, 3Gb/s SATA interface and a 32MB cache.

Besides this model, Hitachi introduced the 7200 RPM Deskstar 7K1000.C hard disk drive series coming in 160GB up to 1TB capacities, the latter providing 500GB per platter.

Both models feature the 512-byte sector formatting for increased shock protection, the Thermal Fly-height Control to increase reliability in read/write processes, and the Hitachi Voltage Efficiency Regulator for a highly efficient power management.

“The demand for higher capacity disk drives is being fueled by the persistent growth of digital information generated by consumers and organizations alike,” said John Rydning, research director for hard disk drives at IDC. “With the introduction of the industry’s first 7200 RPM, 2TB HDD, Hitachi GST is building a tradition of time-to-market leadership for delivering the biggest and fastest disk drives for capacity-hungry PC users, given it was also the first HDD vendor to ship a 1TB HDD, the Deskstar 7K1000, in early 2007.”
