Ubuntu Rescue Remix 9.10 Released

For those who don’t know much about it, Ubuntu Rescue Remix is a free open-source software that comes on a small live CD to provide several tools for data recovery.
The latest version of the Ubuntu-based software toolkit, the 9.10 Karmic Koala, was released and is available for download as an ISO file, containing the GNU ddrecue 1.11, VMV2, Photorec and the GNU-Fdisk.

You can use the image available for download with the USB Startup Disk Creator, which you can find in System-Administration, allowing you to put the toolkit on an USB flash drive.
Having no graphic user interface and being based on the command line, its requirements are low in number, but there’s also the possibility to use the simple graphic environment by choosing the right metapackage. Both options will install the forensics tools and the data recovery on the Ubuntu system.

To recover lost or deleted files even from formatted drives you can use an Ubuntu Desktop CD, but in case you don’t have much RAM or access to the Internet, with the condition that the hard drive isn’t failed, the Ubuntu Rescue Remix is the best solution you can use.

Ubuntu 9.10 Available for Download

The final version of Ubuntu 9.10 was released for both desktop computers, servers and netbooks, and is available for download.
Aiming at making the Linux-based operating system the most user-friendly, the developers team redesigned it and improved the boot time, the audio features and the 3G broadband connectivity among others.
It now delivers the Ubuntu One suite of different online services that enhance the desktop experience, simplifying the backup process, enabling synchronization, file sharing and others.
In addition, the Quickly toolset for application developers is meant to enable a fun automated experience in programming.
Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop features audio revamp for improved sound control and the Firefox 3.5 web browser version from Mozilla.

The Server edition brings the Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud open-source cloud computing environment powered by Eucalyptus Systems, which allows businesses to use private clouds, the MySQL 5.1, upgraded Single Sign On, Django, better support for Xen and KVM, and support for USB 3.0

Novell Released SUSE Enterprise 10 Service Pack 3

Recently, Novell made available the SUSE Enterprise 10 Service Pack 3, which delivers several fixes, updates and patches, along with hardware support released for the SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 system.
The third Service Pack features SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 Service Pack 3 with support for the latest hardware elements for storage, server and networking, plus some improved features for virtual services, system administration and management, and high-speed fabrics.

Another component of the Service Pack 3 is the SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 Service Pack 3, which brings updated drivers to enable support for hardware and peripherals. In addition it comes with the latest Firefox browser updates and the Novell GroupWise collaboration application.
A Software Development Kit is also featured by SUSE Enterprise 10 Service Pack 3. It packs tool updates that provide new ways of creating high-performance software.

Novell also announced that it released the service pack to offer the same suitable platform for mission-critical computing applications via physical, virtual and could environments.

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 is available for purchase as a subscription-based service for $50 for one year, while the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server edition is available as a per-server subscription starting at $349.

Ubuntu 9.10 Release Candidate is out

Ubuntu 9.10 Release Candidate was announced yesterday by Steve Langasek as the complete and stable version, ready to be tested by all users. The development team released the Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop edition, Ubuntu 9.10 Server Edition, as well as the Ubuntu Netbook Remix.

Karmic Koala 9.10 delivers the latest open-source features in the popular Linux distribution built on the idea of providing an operating system that’s easy to use and secure.
Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop Edition has faster startup times, while the Ubuntu 9.10 Server Edition comes with the Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud setup integrated in the installer, plus AppArmor-based system security. The Ubuntu 9.10 Server for UEC and EC2 enables more power and increased stability at the cloud computing level.

The final release of Ubuntu 9.10 is set for October 29 and comes with permanent support of up to 18 months for all variants including Kubuntu, Xubuntu, the Edubuntu educational operating system, Ubuntu Studio and Mythbuntu.
Steve Langasek mentioned a small number of bugs in the 9.10 release candidate, which will be fixed until the final release comes out.

The Desktop version features GNOME 2.28 with the Empathy Instant Messaging service, the Ubuntu Software Center, improved boot times and various interface changes.

Ubuntu Netbook Remix is a lightweight operating system designed to run on mini laptops powered by the low-power Intel Atom technology. It provides a friendly user interface with easy and quick online access, faster boot times, and a pleasant computer experience.

Kubuntu 9.10 was developed based on the KDE 4.3 and features multiple new applications, and the Kubuntu Netbook variant comes with improved integration for OpenOffice and connectivity with social networking environments.

Xubuntu 9.10 features the Xfce 4.6 desktop environment optimized for productivity and low power consumption. It brings the Exaile media player and the Xfce4 power manager among others, while Mythbuntu 9.10 comes with the MythTV 0.22, cool user interface effects, and support for VDPAU hardware acceleration and HD-PVR hardware.

Ubuntu 9.10 Beta Available

Steve Langasek announced the beta release of Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop and Server editions, codenamed Karmic Koala, as well as the Ubuntu Netbook Remix.
The user-friendly Linux distribution available in both desktop and server versions brings lots of improvements over the previous edition, Ubuntu 9.04, introduced back in April with the new GNOME 2.26 desktop environment featuring Brasero 2.26.0, X.Org server 1.6, new notification styles and preferences, improved boot performance, the Linux kernel 2.6.28, a new all-in-one CD burning application and many others.

Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop Edition has improved start-up times, the GNOME 2.28 with the Empathy instant messaging and the Telepathy framework, the Ubuntu Software Center, the gdm 2.28 login manager, the Ubuntu One file sharing service, and the 2.6.31-11.36 kernel.
The new Server version brings the Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud setup, system security improvements with AppArmor, and support for the Eucalyptus configuration.
The other variants of Ubuntu also are available as beta, including Edubuntu 9.10, Kubuntu 9.10, Ubuntu Studio 9.10, Xubuntu 9.10 and Mythbuntu 9.10.

Ubuntu Netbook Remix is the Ubuntu Desktop system optimized to work on mini laptop computers powered by Intel Atom. It comes with a user-friendly interface with direct access to the online environment and the user’s favorite applications, while enabling the same boot time as the desktop edition.

You can get Ubuntu 9.10 either by upgrading from Ubuntu 9.4 or by downloading the version using a torrent client.

Moblin 2.0 for Mini Portable Computers Now Available for Download

Moblin, coming from Mobile Linux, is a lightweight operating system based on Linux, which is optimized to run on Intel Atom-powered mini laptop computers, mobile Internet devices and nettops.
Imad Sousou from the Moblin team has announced the release of Moblin 2.0, the latest version of the platform, and published several details about the Moblin Garage and the upcoming Moblin 2.1 version.

Moblin 2.0 is now available for download from its official website and soon you’ll be able to get new mini portable computers with the system pre-installed. It is characterized by a rich and easy to use interface that gives users access to web browsing and social networking sites.
In addition to the latest version of Moblin, the team also announced the new Moblin Garage catalog with free and open-source applications, as well as the Moblin Application Installer that allows you to setup the ones you like on your computer. Both tools are still under development, but you can check the preview on the official site.

Imad Sousou said the Moblin 2.1 software will bring support not only for mobile internet devices, but also for in-car info-entertainment, and multimedia phones. The release will be available by the end of the year with new nettop display resolutions, different myzone enhancements, Instant Messaging improvements, enhanced language support, the Moblin Garage with the Moblin Application Installer, 3G connectivity support, updated kernel, and Bluetooth.

Shuttle Launches Wall-Mountable All-in-One PC With openSUSE Linux

Shuttle Computers, the manufacturer of mini PC systems, has just announced the introduction of the X500V All-in-One system based on the X50 All-in-One PC platform and running on the Linux operating system.
Shuttle X500V is an ultra-thin PC measuring only 3.6 cm in thickness and coming with the openSUSE Linux 11.1 pre-installed. The operating system supports open-source applications from the official website of openSUSE and allows the user to customize it according to the requirements, in a few easy steps.

The computer can be purchased in white or black and is powered by the low-power consuming Intel Atom 330 dual-core processor featuring two cores of 1.6 GHz, having 1 GB of DDR2-667 SODIMM memory with support for up to 2 GB, integrated graphics, 2.5-inch 160 GB S-ATA hard disk space with support for up to 500 GB, built-in 1.3 MP web camera, and a 15.6-inch display with a resolution of 1366 x 768 and touchscreen technology enabled.

Additional elements include a 4-in-1 card reader, stereo speakers and microphone.
Expansion options include WLAN draft N, 6-channel audio, VGA out, and five USB ports. Users can mount it on the wall based on the VESA standard.
For security, the computer comes with the Kensington Lock meant to increase the anti-theft protection.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4 Update Available

The team behind the Red Hat Enterprise Linux has announced the release of a new version of the open source application platform available for download as Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, release 5.4.
The update with kernel-2.6.18-164.el5 is available for every product in the family, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Advanced Platform for x86, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Server for x86, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Desktop for x86.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Advanced Platform for x86 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Server for x86 are optimized to work on an AMD64, Intel 64, Itanium processor models, as well as System z and Power Systems, while the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Desktop for x86 runs on AMD64 or Intel 64-powered computers.

The new release provides a high-performance, stable and scalable operating system, adding kernel tracepoints for systemtap use, per process I/O accounting, FIEMAP support, 10 GigE drivers with GRO support, FCoE support on standard NICs, and SR I/OV support. 10ZiG Announces Fastest Small Thin Client

10ZiG Technology, a leading provider of IBM iSeries connectivity solutions and developer of XP-, CE- and Linux-based software, announced the release of a new thin client series called the 5600 Series.
The company describes its new systems as the fastest small thin clients, the RBT-616 XP measuring 1.4 x 6.1 x 4.8 inches at 1.4 lbs, while the second model in the series, the RBT-602 Linux, having a total size of 1.4 x 5.9 x 4.7 inches at 1.4 lbs. Both are powered by the low-power consuming Intel Atom N270 Dual Thread processor at 1.6 GHz speeds and use only 12 watts of power.

They are available with Linux, Windows Embedded Standard 2009, or Xpe platforms, supporting dual-monitor connectivity and 802.11 b/g wireless technology with WEP and WPA encryption. Features common to the two thin clients include VDI Ready, the SNMP management software for centralized data management and 3-year warranty.

The Linux-based system comes with Linux 2.6 Kernel, advanced emulation with 8 5250 sessions, splits-screen, macro, rule cursor, multi-host, GUI, and support for 122-key keyboard.

Moonlight 2 Beta Available for Download

Moonlight 2, the open-source version of Silverlight created for Linux and Unix-based operating systems, is now available for download as beta, two years after Microsoft and Novell announced their collaboration in providing the Media Pack for users of the Linux system which brings video and audio codecs.
Moonlight 2 beta allows Linux users to access all of the features enabled by Microsoft Silverlight 2, but brings faster performance and enhanced multimedia content.

The Mono Project team specifies that the second version of Moonlight comes with improved functionality, supporting adaptive streaming of audio and video playback, which enables better streaming of this type of content, depending on the connectivity chosen by the user.
The Mono runtime functionality is 300 times faster than the latest Javascript engine and provides increased performance, while allowing developers use rich web applications through various languages like C#, Python, Ruby and Javascript. It’s key features include multi-platform, multi-language, binary compatible, Microsoft Compatible API, open-source, and comprehensive technology coverage.

Moonlight 2 is available for all popular Linux distributions such as Ubuntu, openSUSE, Fedora, SUSE Linux Enterprise and Red Hat.
