ATI Catalyst 9.6 With Support for Linux Brings New Features

The new version of ATI Catalyst released by AMD for Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP, comes with support for the latest Linux-based operating systems such as Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop, Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 11, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.8 and Ubuntu Linux.

Featuring MultiView, ATI Catalyst 9.6, release version 8.62, enables rendering of applications based on multiple graphical processing unit configurations in an unified environment, while Xinerama runs in either single or multiple configurations. In addition, the driver works with different combinations of graphic card models, such as ATI Radeon HD 4000, ATI Radeon 3000 and ATI Radeon 2000.

ATI Catalyst 9.6 is available for download for Windows Vista 64-bit edition, Windows Vista 32-bit and Windows XP 32-bit edition.
It brings several fixes including for the 3D desktop effects, where icons on the desktop happened to disappear while using the transparent effect. When playing desktop effects, there aren’t issues with the video playback anymore.

You’ll see fixes also in Ubuntu 8.10 when starting X on the surround view setups, and in the 9.04 version of the operating system, during startup of the X Server on ATI Radeon HD 4870 graphical processing units.
Another change is encountered when using the xrandr –prop in Ubuntu 9.04.

Now, videos don’t go blank anymore when you resize the window of DVD playback, and the instability while switching to the fullscreen DVD playback mode in the Totem Player was eliminated.

There are no error messages in Terminal after launching Catalyst Control Center in MultiView, and you can check the correct clock and memory clock values in ATI CAL.

ATI Catalyst 9.6 requires X.Org 6.8, 6.9, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3 or 7.4, Linux kernel 2.6, glibc version 2.2 or 2.3, POSIX Shared Memory support, XFree86-Mesa-libGL, libstdc++, libgcc, zlib, XFree86-libs, freetype and fontconfig.
