A new eBook reader was announced yesterday by Spring Design, a company focused on developing innovative e-reader solutions. It was called Alex and brings some new capabilities, first time encountered in an eBook reader. These include two displays and the Google Android Platform.
They chose the model name Alex probably to create a more personal relationship between the user and his/her eBook reader, while the gadget provides full web browsing capabilities, dual-screen display, and the Duet Navigator.
The main 6-inch E-Ink EDP display in the upper part of the handset is black and white, based on the electronic paper display technology, to enable the feeling of browsing through real newspaper pages, while the secondary 3.5-inch LCD display with touchscreen input, which is actually an integrated Android mobile device, adds support for multimedia content.
As you probably already guessed, this is the world’s first Android eBook reader. In addition to the previously mentioned features, it has Wi-Fi, support for 3G, EVDO/CDMA and GSM networks, removable SD card for plenty of storage, earphones connectivity, built-in speakers, and the Link Notes feature for grabbing multimedia content dynamically.
Spring Design plans to release Alex by the end of this year.
“This is the start of a whole new experience of reading content on e-books, potentially igniting a whole new industry in multimedia e-book publishing for secondary authors to create supplementary content that is hyper linked to the text. We are bringing life to books with audio, video, and annotations,” said Dr. Priscilla Lu, CEO of Spring Design. “This gives readers the ability to fully leverage the resources on the Web, and the tools available in search engines to augment the reading experience.”
